There are many myths surrounding diabetes. However, as the word means, it is just a myth. In other words, it is not true. These myths have made it difficult for people to believe the facts of diabetes. Thereby creating a picture that is not accurate about this disease. Furthermore, it creates, or it cause people to have the stigma about it.
For example, people do not believe that diabetes is a serious and deadly disease. Recently, the American diabetes association created a survey to test the people’s common knowledge about the disease. The score they got is interesting. They found out that the majority of people only know the myth part but not the fact. It was shocking.
Therefore, this blog post by Rajkumar jonnala will help know the top three myths that were exposed during the survey. This will help to stop spreading the false myths about this disease.
Myth 1. Eating too much sugar causes diabetes
No, it is not true. Eating a lot of sugar cannot cause diabetes. The main causes that one can get diabetes are through aging, genetics and lifestyle. Fact: type 1 of this disease is caused by genetics and other unknown factors that trigger the onset of the disease. The type 2 of the disease is caused by genetics and lifestyle factors, Note; when you are overweight, it does not increase your chances of getting diabetes type 2.
As you know, eating foods that have a high amount of fats and calories can make a person gain weight. Therefore, if your family has a history of getting diabetes, make sure that you eat healthy and plan regular exercises to manage your weight.
Therefore, let no one tell you that eating too much sugar you will get diabetes, because they will be lying to you.
Myth 2. When you are overweight or obese you will get diabetes
This is not true. Being overweight cannot cause diabetes. However, being overweight is a factor only if your family has a history of getting diabetes. Therefore, it is not true when a person gains weight he will get diabetes. Sometime even people who have shape and they are slim have got diabetes. Majority of people disregard the fact that even other factors such as age, ethnicity and family history also play a role in getting diabetes type 2.
Fact: majority of overweight people never develop type 2 diabetes and in USA, majority of people that have type 2 diabetes are of normal weights or moderately overweight.
Myth 3. If you have diabetes, you must be on a restrictive diet
This is a big not true! If there were big “NO’s” I would use them in this article. When you have diabetes does not mean that you cannot eat certain food. What they are supposed to do is to go through a proper and healthy diet like everyone ease. This means that the food should not be too fatty, and it should be moderately be saturated with salt and sugar. In other words, the food should be common to what people eat.
Don’t let yourself be one of the people who are spreading these rumors. Do your research well and know the difference of fact and the truth.
